SOLUTION: Some Lync 2013 Server Enterprise Enterprise setup problems: Operating system error 5, Create-RtcDatabaseStore

Some Lync 2013 Server Enterprise setup problems I faced with during setup uninstall and reinstall processes..

Applies to Lync 2013 Enterprise, Windows 2008 R2

PROBLEM 1:
During Lync 2013 Front End Server Enterprise setup I got the following error:

Attaching database rtc from Data Path \\Lyncfe1.internal.contoso.com\C$\CsData\RtcDatabaseStore\rtclocal\DbPath, Log Path \\Lyncfe1.internal.contoso.com\C$\CsData

\RtcDatabaseStore\rtclocal\LogPath.
Attaching Database rtc. Data Path \\Lyncfe1.internal.contoso.com\C$\CsData\RtcDatabaseStore\rtclocal\DbPath\rtc.mdf, Log Path \\Lyncfe1.internal.contoso.com\C$\CsData

\RtcDatabaseStore\rtclocal\LogPath\rtc.ldf.
Failed to attach database rtc from Data Path \\Lyncfe1.internal.contoso.com\C$\CsData\RtcDatabaseStore\rtclocal\DbPath\rtc.mdf, Log Path \\Lyncfe1.internal.contoso.com\C$\CsData

\RtcDatabaseStore\rtclocal\LogPath\rtc.ldf.
Directory lookup for the file “\\Lyncfe1.internal.contoso.com\C$\CsData\RtcDatabaseStore\rtclocal\DbPath\rtc.mdf” failed with the operating system error 5(Access is denied.).

RESOLUTION
I run process monitor to see file access to C:\CsData\RtcDatabaseStore\rtclocal\DbPath\rtc.mdf. and eventually see that there is and rtc.mdf file. I tried to rename it success! If
the file has been used I could not rename it. (This file should have remain there from previous setup test). So setup could not create  the new rtc.mdf file since rtc.mdf already exists. After rename or delete the old rtc.mdf  run setup again: successful.

PROBLEM 2
Lync Server Front-End Services cannot start. I saw following errors in event log:

Log Name:      Application

</EventData>
</Event>

RESOLUTION
Open Topology builder, right-click then install database. This step created missing xds database.

PROBLEM 3:
During Lync Edge Server 2003 setup I got the following error:

MSI result: 0   2/4/2013 5:04:53 PM

Install databases      2/4/2013 5:04:53 PM   Failed

Error: An error occurred while applying SQL script for the feature RtcDatabaseStore. For details, see the log file ‘C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp

RESOLUTION:
Again some problems due to previous setup tries:
rename  C:\CsData\RtcDatabaseStore\rtclocal\DbPath
to  DbPath_old
and
C:\CsData\RtcDatabaseStore\rtclocal\LogPath to  LogPath_old and run setup again.

PROBLEM 4:
Uninstall only Lync 2013 Server binaries from a server.

Some how you may need to uninstall and reinstall Lync 2013 FE server from a Windows 2008 R2 server. So you don’t want to delete the server from the topology. Here is my steps. And
after reinstall I had no problems.

go to control panel/Uninstall or change a program.

1-Uninstall everything starts with Lync

I prompts you that “should use topology builder…Do you want to continue?” Click yes and continue.

2-Uninstall all SQL instances

3- Rename or delete  SQL and Lync program folders and C:\CsData

now you can reinstall Lync 2013 server. After Setup I had no problems.

Renaming the directories, wow, that worked wonders, thank you kindly! Worst install I’ve ever dealt with.

      Hello Trevor,
Thanks for the feedback. Good to hear it helped.
Lync Server setup is really annoying black box when we compare with other Microsoft server products…

  4. Jon says:

I owe you a beer. Had a similar problem with implementing archiving in problem 1. Renamed the archiving folder and re-ran, everything went fine after that.

  5. Richard says:

Thank you. You saved my night.

  6. FoaRyan says:

I have Problem #2 where I get “Login failed for user ‘NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE’.”

However I am using an internal SQL database (on the Lync server itself – we only have 50 users), so if I try to install the database from the Topology Builder, I receive a message “All the SQL stores in this topology are collocated with the services that depends on them.” It then says to run local setup on the SQL machines to install databases.

I could just try that, but I would be reasonably certain the topology builder needs to create this database, otherwise it won’t be created properly. Is there a different procedure for this step in my configuration?

    • Refik Ünver says:

It is a very strange error. Seems like you are upgrading from a previous version. If I were you, (if it is a brand new server) I’ll try this: remove all Lync bits and dbs, and run setup again. (see Problem 4). It may be less time consuming. If you find a solution pls share with us.

  7. Renaming DB from CSData folder resolves my issue, Thanks
